What does BUN mean?

BUN is a blood test that is most often used as one measure of kidney function.

BUN stands for Blood Urea Nitrogen.

Urea is a waste product from protein breakdown. The kidneys normally remove excess urea. If the kidneys do not work properly, Urea builds up in the blood and the BUN is elevated.
